Flying Lab teams with Akella to bring Piracy to the High Seas
Flying Lab Software, maker of the award-winning Rails Across America™, and Akella Corporation, developer of the acclaimed Sea Dogs™ and Age of Sail™ series, are proud to announce that Akella will create original 3-D models of vintage sailing ships for Flying Lab's upcoming historical MMORPG Pirates of the Burning Sea™.
Akella is bringing their substantial creative experience with the age of fighting sail to bear on this new project. From swift sloops to mighty ships of the line bristling with cannon, the models will set a new bar for detail and authenticity.
"Akella's outsourcing group has been very enthusiastic and responsive, and we're thrilled to be working with them. We're fans of their games, so working with their artists is a real treat," said Russell Williams, Executive Producer at Flying Lab Software. "Because we're a small studio, outsourcing this core artwork means we can stay focused on gameplay and software engineering. It's a great way to leverage our specialties and theirs."
"We've been creating adventures at sea for years now, and we've built up the staff and expertise to do great work with this material," said Igor A. Goussarov, Producer at Akella Corporation. "And we're really looking forward to showing what we can do when we target high-end machines."
Pirates of the Burning Sea will be released for the PC in the fall of this year, using the latest DirectX 9 class video cards and fastest machines to present naval action as it's never been seen before. The game will use the online distribution power of Valve's Steam™ technology, and new iterations will regularly add major new features in the months after release.

Flying Lab Software is proud to announce its next title, Pirates of the Burning Sea, coming in the fall of 2003 for PCs. Hoist sails, weigh anchor, and lead your crew into blazing combat, treacherous politics, and merchant empires. This new online-only game of action and adventure immerses you in the Caribbean of the 18th Century, as the old powers are in turmoil and the political map of the world is swiftly changing.
Sail the most detailed ships ever seen in a game on a stunning ocean with real waves, wind, and weather - then take your vessels into battle with our realistic combat system. Engage in large-scale naval actions with your friends and foes, firing broadsides, raking the bow, and boarding the enemy to seize their prize.
Develop your character as a naval officer, serving the crown on dire missions against the worst villains of the sea; renounce your peaceful past and become a pirate or privateer, preying on the gold fleets and shipping lanes where vessels fat with loot await your sword; or build a fortune as a free trader, using the game's dynamic economy to line your pockets and expand your trading fleet across dozens of ports.
Get involved in real politics, with regular elections in which you can become the governor of any port and lay down your law. Governors set taxes, build fortifications, manage soldiers, and encourage trade, while sending out spies and saboteurs to strike at rivals.
Shape your world with our peer-reviewed content creation system, where you can submit original textures and models you create for objects in the game - and then sell them within the game world! Design a new sword, or a new fabric texture. License its use to a merchant, or sell it from your own shop. Reap the rewards, and see your work in the hands of thousands of players!
We are building this game for the serious gamer. It's broadband only, with high-end hardware specs for gorgeous graphics - a GeForce 3 or better is required in at least a 1ghz machine, and we're optimizing the game for the very latest DirectX 9.0-class cards.
We're publishing it direct to gamers using Valve's cool new Steam technology. This is the same delivery system used by Half-Life and Counterstrike.
Early screenshots, FAQs, and forums are up and running at our new web site: www.burningsea.com. The first iteration of the game launches in the fourth quarter of 2003, with new iterations regularly adding major new features in the months after release.
